About TMBliss

TMBliss is a command-line tool that keeps development files out of your Time Machine backups. It goes through your project folders and excludes what your .gitignore files already ignore, such as node_modules and build output.

To keep something in the backup anyway, pass it with --allowlist-glob, or put a .tmbliss file in the folder. It works like a .gitignore in reverse. tmbliss reset removes the exclusions again.

Installed with Homebrew, it can also run as a background service every 10 hours, with its settings in a config file.

Install

Homebrew
brew install reeywhaar/tap/tmbliss

Or download the Apple Silicon or Intel build from the releases page and put tmbliss somewhere on your PATH. Needs macOS 12 or later.

Use it

Shell
# list what would be excluded under ~/Dev
tmbliss list --path ~/Dev

# check what the Homebrew config would exclude, without changing anything
sudo tmbliss conf --path /opt/homebrew/etc/tmbliss.conf.json --dry-run true

# let Homebrew run it every 10 hours
brew services start tmbliss

See the README for the other commands and options.
